EDITORIAL BY MARK
Hi Everybody,
It seems like every time I turn around I am reading, or people make mention, of problems with our current economy. Housing prices have dropped to levels where the average homeowner has no equity in their property, fuel prices continue to rise with oil prices hovering above $100 a barrel, and there is more and more talk of a recession.
A recession is basically negative growth in the economy over a six month time period. The Commerce Department reported our gross domestic product increased at a low 0.6 percent for the last quarter of 2007. 0.6 percent is very close to a negative growth figure when compared to a 4.9 percent increase earlier in 2007.
A recession is probably in our near future, but I think the question is how will it impact you or me. I personally think it will be short lived and we will bounce back quickly. Most people respond to higher gas prices by cutting back on unnecessary trips in their vehicles, which is the logical thing to do. It's also logical to decrease our spending habits when there is a slowdown in the economy. And people are a little leery because it is an election year too.
From the viewpoint of RV's I haven't really seen a significant decrease in RVers plans for using their RV's. Sure we take shorter trips, staying closer to home to save on fuel costs, and again this is the logical thing to do. Some of my favorite camping destinations are less than 100 miles from where we live. On a recent poll we conducted at our rvuniversity.com site we asked people "what the average length of your RV trips are." 56% responded one weekend, with 4% saying more than a month, so shorter more economical trips seem to be the current trend.
Here's one thought. Take $20 a week out of your paycheck and put it in a fuel savings account for next years RV trips. If you make $500 a week this is only 4% of your weekly paycheck. $20 X 52 weeks is $1,040. If we figure gas at $3.25 a gallon you could purchase 320 gallons of gas and if you have an RV that gets 7.5 miles to a gallon you could travel 2,400 miles in you RV next year without being concerned about fuel.
Just a thought!
On another note we recently revamped our RVUniversity.com site to make it a bit more interactive and fun to stop by and visit every now and then. We archived our "Play & Learn" crossword puzzles, and added a monthly "RV Educated Quiz" and a monthly "Poll" on RV related topics. Each month we will feature the quiz and poll question of the month in our newsletter. And of course you can still participate in our "Just for Fun" U of RV degree program.
Vicki Kieva's brand new cookbook titled, My RV Kitchen & Favorite Recipes is now avaiable on our site. It's not your average cookbook, Vicki's book is loaded with expert advice on everything from how to equip your RV kitchen to great recipes and tips.
I hope you enjoy the newsletter
Until next month Happy Camping!

RVING WITH MARK POLK ~ Feature Article: De-Winterize and Sanitize your RV Water System
At the end of your camping season you drained the water system, winterized the RV and put it in storage. One problem with this is that on most RV’s when you drain the fresh water holding tank there is still some water left in the tank. Let’s say you do manage to drain all of the water out of the tank. There is still moisture in the water system. Just imagine what can grow in that moist tank while it sits for three or four months. I’d rather not think about it. ....

Arm Yourself with Qualified RV Buying Information, Before you Buy Your RV! ....
Q:Will my RV extended service plan cover me if I have a tire blowout?
Mark Says: Don’t get an extended service plan confused with an emergency roadside assistance plan. Some service plans do offer additional coverage and protection like a towing service or tire repair service, but most don’t. Many RV manufacturers include an emergency roadside plan for a certain time period when you purchase a new RV. If the RV you buy does not come with one, I recommend you look into and purchase a good roadside assistance plan. It can be the difference between a good vacation and a ruined vacation. This is something else you will want to shop around and compare prices on before you buy. RV clubs offer discounted rates to members and there are many plans to choose from.

JUST ACROSS THE BORDER
An RV getaway to south Texas Rio Grande Valley is
popular with many RVers. It's also an economical
place to spend the winter. Highlights include hundreds
of quality campgrounds/resorts featuring busy winter
activities; great shopping spots; inexpensive RV service
facilities; tourist attractions; many eateries and
generally warm weather. The beaches of South Padre
are never far away either. On the downside, it's frequently
windy so sitting under the awning is not always possible:
most park activity directors provide popular social
alternatives. Another highlight to a Rio Grande visit is
the convenient drive to the Mexican border: park on the
U.S. side and simply pay your quarter to walk across
a short bridge to hypnotic Progresso. At the end of the
bridge awaits a plethora of pharmacies, dentists, doctors,
discount department stores, shops, street vendors and
beauty salons (featuring bargain-priced quality haircuts,
shave, pedicures, manicures, facials and other services).
Many quality restaurants serve Mexican and American
dishes and intertwine with a wide selection of bars. Two-
for-one national drinks during extended happy hours are
popular with many budget-minded RVers.
About RV LIVING IN THE 21ST CENTURY
This book is for the new or experienced RVer. There are
so many tips from “how to” subjects as well as practical advice on "what to do"
when you have medical problems on the road, and how to choose an emergency
roadside service. The security tips for your house while you are away and health
& safety tips are just a couple of subjects out of many that are invaluable
and give you peace of mind! There is so much information we couldn't possibly
list it all. RV Education 101 highly recommends this book: RV

RV Q & A by Mark Polk
*NOTE: At Mark's discretion, material might be edited to suit a wide audience. Due to the large volume of material and correspondence we receive, individual replies might not be possible, nor can we acknowledge receipt of submitted material. Selected questions will be answered in future issues of our RV Education 101 newsletter and on our site. Thank-you for your understanding.
Q.1. My awning stays rolled up for weeks, and sometimes months at a time. Even though I try to put it away dry, it still gets mildew on it. Those black mildew areas are difficult to remove, but most probably the awning is still damp when it is rolled up, though it might seem dry. I saw an awning at a campsite that was not made out of the vinyl covered fabric, but was made out of some sort of mesh. It seemed to shade the sun quite well, but it was made of some sort of fabric you could almost see through. Do you know by chance what brand of awning that might have been? I couldn't see a name on it, and the owners of the trailer with the awning was not there so I could ask them. It would seem to me that an awning like that would be just right for me. Can you help me?
Q.2. I am interested in purchasing the 'Good Governor".... my question is regarding use. At a camp site.... prior to plugging into a 50 amp or 30 amp outlet.... how do you use the Good Governor with a 120V plug? Do you plug it into the coach outlet inside..... and then plug in the 50 amp.... and then go inside to evaluate the read-out..... If there is a problem isn't that too late. I realize I may be all wrong in the usage.... just seeking clarification. Thanks for your support.
Q.3. I had an aftermarket auto security system installed in my RV. Since then, my starting battery draws down. The RV is in storage but plugged into house current. I am able to start the engine with the house batteries. What could be draining the start battery? Doesn't make sense as cars with security systems don't seem to drain the battery. Should the system be wired to the house batteries? I need the security system on as the RV has been broken into.

RV and Auto Insurance Basics An auto policy will not suffice for an RV, but there is a great deal of overlap between RV and auto policies. If you have a motorized RV, you will need some of the same coverage’s provided by an auto policy plus specialized RV coverages. Bear with me and I will attempt to explain this without confusing you. Regardless of the insurance company you decide to use, there are a handful of basic coverage’s you will need to have in your policy. Again, this coverage is very similar, if not identical, to the coverage you have on your personal auto insurance policy. This coverage can be broken down into two different categories; liability and physical damage. All motorized RV’s will have some form of liability coverage. Towable RV’s like travel trailers and 5th wheel trailers do not have any liability coverage. However, if you own a travel trailer or 5th wheel the section on liability may contain information helpful to you regarding the vehicle you use to tow your trailer. Coach Care RV Service Centers

About us:
Our goal with this monthly newsletter is to provide you with helpful information to make all of your RV experiences more enjoyable. I left my position as an RV Sales and F&I manager in 2000 to start my own company, RV Education 101. We produce educational videos, DVDs and e-books on how to use and maintain your RV. The reason I left my job was due to my concern about the lack of educational and safety awareness material available to the RV consumer, in other words, you. We are a small company. My wife Dawn left her position in RV sales to help start the company and is our Sales and Marketing Director. We currently have a 35-foot Class A motor home. We have two boys, Tyler 11 and Josh 17, both avid RVers and two dogs, Gracie and Buck. Gracie is the good one.
