Hi Everybody,

We have planned to film a 5th wheel towing video for well over a year now. We were going to start filming back in March, but for one reason or another it didn't work out. Lorrin & Nyla Walsh, who I worked with on the "Drive your Motorhome Like a Pro" DVD are on their way from Washington state, as I write this, to work on the "Tow your 5th Wheel Trailer Like a Pro" project.

It took time to plan everything, write the script and make all the arrangements, but we finally start filming this Tuesday. It has been a while since we produced our last DVD title, so I am looking forward to a new project of this scale.

This week's feature article is about some simple things you can do to increase the life of your tow vehicle, or motorhome's engine. These tips will work for your automobile engine too. It seemed like an appropriate article (to take better care of what we already own) since every time you turn around all you hear is how poor the economy is doing. Take a few minutes to read the article, it might save you some money in the long run.

Until next week, plan your trip, travel safe and enjoy your RV experiences. Remember, getting there is half the fun!

Tips to Increase Engine Life Today we’re going to talk about some easy ways to increase the life of your tow vehicle or motorhome’s engine. Actually there are many ways to to increase engine life in a vehicle, but I want to narrow the list to what I consider the most important. When all you hear every day is how poorly the economy is doing, it only makes sense to buckle down and take better care of what you already own....... Read the article

Q.Is there a solution/product that is safe to use to sanitize and clean out the drain and gray tank of our 5th wheel trailer? There seems to be a slight odor coming from the drain and I'm not sure what to pour down it to help with the smell.

Mark Says:
It's not uncommon for the gray water tank to have odors from time to time. You can add enzyme based holding tank chemicals (that are used for the black tank) to the gray water tank as well. After you empty the tanks pour a couple ounces of the holding tank chemical down one (or more) of the drains and run 2-3 gallons of water down the drain afterwards. I also use dish washing liquid like Dawn. After you empty the tank squirt some dawn down all of the drains and add some water. The combined mixture of Dawn and water helps clean the tank as you drive down the road, and it will help with odors too.

There are also RV holding tank products specially formulated for the gray tank. I never used any, but if you do a search I'm sure lots of them will come up.

Mark's RV Quick Tip:
Plugging In at the Campground: Pull enough power cord from the compartment to reach the campground electrical connection. Plug into the receptacle that matches the amperage requirements of your RV (30 amp or 50 amp). Use electrical adapters as required. If at all possible try to avoid using an extension cord. Some campgrounds have a circuit breaker in the box that must be turned on to allow electricity to the RV.

A product that Mark personally uses: Camping/RV Battery Chargers- BatteryMINDers® are the new generation of SMART, pulse type "computer-on-a-chip" chargers, that safely charge and maintain all size / type / brands of batteries including starter, deep cycle and sealed types including AGM “dry” made by OPTIMA, ODYSSEY, EXIDE, INTERSTATE, et al. They do all of this without ever overcharging, no matter how long they are left on charge – days-weeks-or even months. Dubbed the chargers with "brains," they are the first to fully-automatically reverse the primary cause of early battery failure known as "sulfation". Sulfated batteries once considered beyond recovery can now be brought back to long-term useful condition. Certain models of BatteryMINDers® can more than double the useful life of new batteries.

About us:

Our goal with RV University This Week is to provide you with helpful information to make all of your RV experiences more enjoyable. I left my position as an RV Sales and F&I manager in 2000 to start my own company, RV Education 101. We produce educational videos, DVDs and e-books on how to use and maintain your RV. The reason I left my job was due to my concern about the lack of educational and safety awareness material available to the RV consumer, in other words, you. We are a small company. My wife Dawn left her position in RV sales to help start the company and is our Sales and Marketing Director. We currently have a 35-foot Class A motor home. We have two boys, Tyler 13 and Josh 19, both avid RVers and two dogs, Gracie and Buck. Gracie is the good one.
