STILL NEED TO PREPARE FOR WINTER???
Winterizing and Storing your RV DVD
Hi Mark- We bought a trailer last year and upon finding your website I ordered a set of DVD's. I have to say they are amazing. I winterized the trailer myself and saved a good bit of money. The dealership wanted ninety nine dollars to winterize it. So in buying the DVD's I have already paid for them thru the winterizing costs I have saved. One question I have is what is the purpose of parking the trailer on a piece of wood over the winter? Thanks for your input and for a terrific website ....David.
MARK SAYS You need to always place something between the tires and the ground. Make sure whatever you use is larger than the actual foot print of the tire. This extends your tire life and protects your tires from the elements.

EDITORIAL BY MARK

Hi everybody,
I had good intentions for sending our October newsletter out, but received some tragic news in September. My sister, who lived in Pennsylvania, was killed in an automobile accident on the 28th of September. The morning after receiving this news we headed out in the motorhome to be with family and to help with all of the arrangements. It took a while for the reality of this to set in, but when it did I realized just how quick something horrible like this can happen. It makes you think how precious life is and what we do with it while we are here. I will miss my sister dearly.

Although the reason for taking the trip was under very unfortunate circumstances it is always nice to use the RV, and it provided us with our own space, not imposing on others during this tough time.

In RV related news I have been reading many different sources about how bleak the RV industry is now and will remain for some time to come in the future. Certainly higher gas prices during the prime travel season, a weakened economy, a volatile stock market and the recent election have all contributed to the RV industry and most other industries reporting below average sales for 2008 and forecasts for 2009. The problems with the banking industry (and its rich greedy executives) and the economy in general has taken its toll, but we will bounce back, because this is America, and we always do.

So for those of you contemplating purchasing an RV, don't give up on your dreams and for those of us who already own an RV just sit down, plan a trip and go have fun RVing.

I hope you enjoy the newsletter
Until next month Happy Camping!
Mark

CANADA BORDER CROSSING TIPS
by Peggi McDonald, Author of RV Living in the 21st Century

At the border use the car and/or RV lanes, not the truck lanes. Never volunteer you're full-timing. Agents feel that without a residence or reason to return home you could be a problem for the host country. Always remove sunglasses so agents can read your eyes. Only answer questions asked, add nothing more. If asked "Do you have any cigarettes," don't reply "I don't smoke." If questioned about whether you have a gun, answering "I left it with my son" is too much information. Avoid trying to be witty: agents have a difficult job— you have limited rights at the border. Expect an officer to come on board for a cursory look. Your unit is no different than a suitcase at the airport; expect to repack after an inspection. During a less-than-perfect crossing, ask to speak to the supervisor to determine your course of action.

About RV LIVING IN THE 21ST CENTURY
This book is for the new or experienced RVer. There are so many tips from “how to” subjects as well as practical advice on "what to do" when you have medical problems on the road, and how to choose an emergency roadside service. The security tips for your house while you are away and health & safety tips are just a couple of subjects out of many that are invaluable and give you peace of mind! There is so much information we couldn't possibly list it all. RV Education 101 highly recommends this book: RV Living in the 21st Century

Arm Yourself with Qualified RV Buying Information, Before you Buy Your RV! ....
Q: I saw where someone was talking about about a box size on their pop-up camper. What is a box size ?

Mark Says: Pop-ups are commonly referred to by their box size. What this means is the length of the box that is mounted to the frame of the trailer. For years, manufacturers offered 8-foot, 10-foot and 12-foot boxes for their pop-ups. Now innovative manufacturers are coming out with even larger versions, 14-foot boxes, and off road models for campers that really want to explore America’s back roads. The closed length of a pop-up is measured from the front of the tongue to the rear bumper. Pop-ups can sleep up to eight people depending on the model and prices can range from $6,000 to over $14,000.

RV Q & A by Mark Polk

*NOTE: At Mark's discretion, material might be edited to suit a wide audience. Due to the large volume of material and correspondence we receive, individual replies might not be possible, nor can we acknowledge receipt of submitted material. Selected questions will be answered in future issues of our RV Education 101 newsletter and on our site. Thank-you for your understanding.

Q.1. Last year in Palm Springs, while hooked up to 50 amp service, the park had an electrical shutdown on several occasions. At one point it was long enough that I had to turn on my generator to recharge my batteries. I was still hooked up to park power source. The LED lights went yellow and finally red and appliance would not work in 110 volt receptacles. The power was finally restored and everything seemed to correct itself and we finished our stay in Palm Springs and return to Portland Oregon. This year while at a tailgate party in Seattle, I had to turn on my Generator to get power (we were dry camping in UW parking lot), and the same thing happened. My TV, Microwave and electrical receptacles would not work. I have an inverter on board, four house batteries, and fuses appear to be good. I am in need of professional advise as to what to look for.

Q.2. Mark we have our first class A motorhome (4 months now) and are not going to use it in the winter. What are some things I should do to winterize it and come Spring is there something I should do?

Q.3. I have a 27 foot Class C motorhome and the auxiliary battery needs to be replaced. The old one says RV/Marine deep cycle, should I get the same type?

Pet E.R. Guide -Printed Book By: Melinda Lord
Published by Trailer Life Books-

Do you travel with pets? If so this book is a MUST have. RV Education 101 Endorses this directory of 24-Hour and After-Hour veterinary facilities in the United States. It was written by a good friend of ours. Mark and Dawn Polk HIGHLY recommend this Guide.

We had to use it on an RV trip in the mountains. Buck our Terrier had a really bad cough and was not able to rest at all. We found a Pet clinic in the directory and had him there within the hour. Buck was diagnosed with Trachial Bronchitis and given antibiotics and cough medicine. The trip was saved and Buck was very grateful! Learn More

General and Unsubscribe Info

About us:

Our goal with this monthly newsletter is to provide you with helpful information to make all of your RV experiences more enjoyable. I left my position as an RV Sales and F&I manager in 2000 to start my own company, RV Education 101. We produce educational videos, DVDs and e-books on how to use and maintain your RV. The reason I left my job was due to my concern about the lack of educational and safety awareness material available to the RV consumer, in other words, you. We are a small company. My wife Dawn left her position in RV sales to help start the company and is our Sales and Marketing Director. We currently have a 35-foot Class A motor home. We have two boys, Tyler 11 and Josh 18, both avid RVers and two dogs, Gracie and Buck. Gracie is the good one.
