EDITORIAL BY MARK
Hi Everybody,
Well the 2007 camping season is winding down. I can tell when this happens each year by the increase in sales of our Winterizing & Storing your RV DVD title. Over the past two years we averaged about 8,500 miles on our RV. This year we traveled about 3,200 miles in our RV. I wish we had the time to travel more this summer, but for whatever reason we just didn't get to. I honestly don't think the fuel prices impacted our decision to travel less than in the past, we just didn't have as many trips planned this summer, not to mention our workload this year.
We do plan to use the RV over Thanksgiving and then it will probably be parked for the rest of 2007. For the first time in a long time we are actually planning a trip that doesn't include the RV. Over the Christmas school break we plan to take the boys on a ski trip in the NC mountains. The only reason we chose not to take the RV is because of the possible road conditions. We were also informed the water at one of the local campgrounds is shut off during the winter months; but that didn't really impact our decision, the RV can hold up to 100 gallons of potable water.
The reality of not using or having the RV on this trip really set in the other day. We will be taking our Jeep on the trip and we need some type of external storage system for our luggage because there will be five of us and two dogs. We are renting a cabin and we will need to go out and buy our food to stock the refrigerator. I'm not sure how other things like bed linens and cooking utensils will work. There are contracts to sign, deposits to pay, pet agreements and more deposits to deal with. Planning this trip has made me realize why we got an RV in the first place. By the time I add up the rental fees, eating out, gas, pet deposits and all of the hassles of not having all of our stuff right at our finger tips and sleeping in our own beds I not only realize how much I miss the RV, but it really is cheaper to stay in the RV too.
HGTV invited us to attend the annual Pennsylvania RV show last month and film some segments for the HGTV 2008 RV show. We had a lot of fun working with the host and film crew and got a sneak peek of what's new for 2008. The show will air on HGTV in March of 2008. I'll keep you posted once we get the actual dates.
Most of you know we have two dogs, Buck & Gracie, that travel with us everywhere we go. Gracie, our West Highland White Terrier got very sick a couple of weeks ago. She has pneumonia and is at the NC State veterinary school in Raleigh NC. They can't tell us if she will make it through this, but they are doing everything possible to make her well again. Please keep Gracie in your thoughts and prayers.
Thanks again to all of you and enjoy the newsletter.
Until next month,
happy camping,
Mark
Arm Yourself with Qualified RV Buying Information From the Insider Experts,
Before you Buy Your RV! ....
What does it mean when RV Manufacturers refer to entry level units, mid-line units, and high end RV’s?
Mark Says: I used to compare it to the automobile industry. Once my customers knew what type of RV they wanted I would ask them to tell me if they were shopping for a Chevrolet, Buick or a Cadillac. Then I knew where to start. These different levels also mean that different materials are used to build the RV, different levels of features are offered, and different chassis and drive train components are used. You always need to keep in mind that you get what you pay for. There is absolutely nothing wrong with buying a Chevy, and if you buy a Chevy you get a Chevy.

Many of the free dump stations available to RVers are closing because of chemicals that are harmful to septic systems and because RVers are abusing these dump stations. If we want to have access to these dump stations it is absolutely essential that we use septic safe chemicals, and that we clean up after ourselves and do not abuse dump stations. Enzyme based chemicals use the good bacteria to digest waste and control odors.
Formaldehyde based chemicals destroy the bacteria that’s needed to break down waste and they can be dangerous to humans and pets.

OFF-LOADING EXTRAS
RVs are not meant to carry an abundance of extras —
they have weight limits. Last summer while making our
motorhome ready for sale we off-loaded unnecessary
collectibles into a temporary shed. It became obvious
we had much more stuff than we needed, even though in
my seminars I stress that RVers should remove all things
not used in the past year. We went through our unit once
and then repeated the process. It took two overstuffed
carloads to transfer everything to our permanent storage
unit. Only then did we realize how many unnecessary items
(and extra weight) we had been carrying. Take a look
around your own unit and eliminate all the extras.
Overloading stresses every component of your RV from
the brakes to the tires to the handling, etc.
I was recently privileged to preview Mark Polk's 'RV CARE AND MAINTENANCE DVD'- part of his New Seminar Series. Mark addresses preventive maintenance and how to trouble-shoot potential problems on every working component before it can cause major concern...Knowing what to look for is 90% of the solution Read More

Q My RV has a 30-amp breaker box, and I just had two new a/c units installed (15,000 BTU Coleman’s). The tech told me that they cannot be run at the same time when I am hooked up to shore power because they will draw too much power, but that they can run at the same time when they're on generator power. Is it true that shore power won't work to power both? Thanks for your help!
Q I live in Lewisburg, PA. I'm ready to winterize and store our 28' TT. I've read that you should put wood under the tires when storing the RV. What's the purpose of the wood under the tires? Also, will the plastic leveling blocks (like Lynx Levelers) work just as well? Thanks!
Q Hello, you guys have helped me before so I hope you do not mind me bothering you. I purchased a Wilderness Yukon Trailer 29' and I would like to purchase a generator, but I have no idea what size generator would be needed to run everything in my trailer. If you have any info I would appreciate the help!!
Q Hello Mark, I read your how to Buy an RV article, however I have a question not covered in the article. Can you please advise me on this question. How do I determine the price to pay when purchasing a used RV? Do I go by NADA value or the asking price? Help would be greatly appreciated, I don't want to make a big mistake. Thank you in advance,

Make / Models: Model/Build Years:
Any of the Below motorhomes built with Cummins ISL CM850 diesel engines are being recalled. The connecting rod contains a machining defect in the wrist pin bushing of the rod that could cause a seizure of the piston pin. If allowed to progress, this can lead to engine failure with the possibility of the rod rupturing the lock cavity, spilling oil and debris onto the roadway increasing the risk of a crash. The manufacturers are working with Cummins to recalibrate the engine control module and enhance the engine protection system enabling it to provide early detection of the failure mode and avoid more serious engine damage and resultant safety hazard. Cummins will also install a new valve cover with a crankcase pressure sensor.

About us:
Our goal with this monthly newsletter is to provide you with helpful information to make all of your RV experiences more enjoyable. I left my position as an RV Sales and F&I manager in 2000 to start my own company, RV Education 101. We produce educational videos, DVDs and e-books on how to use and maintain your RV. The reason I left my job was due to my concern about the lack of educational and safety awareness material available to the RV consumer, in other words, you. We are a small company. My wife Dawn left her position in RV sales to help start the company and is our Sales and Marketing Director. We currently have a 35-foot Class A motor home. We have two boys, Tyler 10 and Josh 17, both avid RVers and two dogs, Gracie and Buck. Gracie is the good one.
