Editorial by Mark
Hi Everybody,
I've got some good news and some bad news this month. The bad news is we're already into the third month of a brand new year. The good news is, camping season is getting closer by the day. I guess the good news outweighs the bad news in this scenario.
We took advantage of some unseasonably warm weather in February, by using the new Miracle Truss building our RV is stored in to start filming a new DVD titled "RV Care & Maintenance." This DVD will be packed with all kinds of information concerning how to protect your investment; from simple cleaning techniques to more complex topics like battery and tire maintenance. I have a 25 page script, and 10 pages into the DVD is already close to 30 minutes of edited video. This month's video clip is a short excerpt from the new DVD title. I'll keep you posted on our progress.
Speaking of video, if you're a do-it-yourselfer I also updated our older "EZ RV upgrades" VHS and will have it available on DVD shortly.
This is a popular time of year to shop for RV's so my feature article this month is an excerpt from my book, on RV financing Frequently Asked Questions. If you haven't already purchased your RV it may help answer some of questions you have. And don't forget to check out our monthly Play & Learn crossword puzzle. This month's puzzle can help you improve your fuel economy.
Until next month, happy camping,
Mark

RV Financing Frequently Asked Questions
It’s that time of the year again, when many people are considering purchasing an RV. When I was a sales manager and finance manager for an RV dealership I would get asked lots of questions about financing RV’s. I organized some of these questions and included them in the RV financing section of my book, “The RV Bookâ€. Here is an excerpt from my book on RV financing FAQ

....Q. should I buy a new RV or a used RV?
Mark says....I touched on this subject briefly when we talked about how much you can afford to pay for an RV. Cost is one of the main factors concerning new versus used, but there are several other factors to consider too. One point among others to think about is if you’re only going to use the RV two weeks out of the year, a used RV might be your best decision. On the other hand, if you are planning on going fulltiming or traveling cross country, a new RV with a full warranty would be a better choice. Another consideration when thinking about purchasing a used RV is the finance terms and interest rates. Because the RV is used, banks offer shorter finance terms and higher interest rates compared to new RV financing. See the finance section in the book for more information....
Purchasing an RV is a major investment, similar to buying a house. It is after all your home away from home and we need to slowww down the buying process and make some educated, well informed decisions. When we purchase an RV it's easy to overlook something, forget to check something, or most importantly not be properly informed about something.
And when you're finally ready to go shopping for the perfect RV, there is one of Mark's valuable buyer's checklist included, so nothing is overlooked.BUY NOW[*5] 56 pages: This is an instant download for only $12.95 ..cheaper than a college course!

WALKIE TALKIES ARE HANDY
These hand held devices are a valuable accessory. John and I previously felt we were always on the same wavelength with an innate ability to find each other in a large crowd. How wrong we were. Now we are constantly in voice contact in grocery stores and at flea markets, RV rallies, RV shows and any large gathering. While presenting seminars or selling at craft shows, John is never far away to bring me last-minute items. Thanks to these versatile beepers, we are always close at hand to each other. One time, on a trip from Nova Scotia, our tow bar developed a problem that forced us to travel separately. Our car is not equipped with a CB, but thanks to our compact hand held walkie-talkies we chatted the entire way to the repair shop. Our walkie-talkies use AAA batteries but other inexpensive units come with rechargeables.

The RV Insurance Corner: Learning About RV Insurance Through Stories and Examples
RV Education 101 feels that prevention is the best protection. We also feel that by adding some real life scenario's of insurance claims, we can help educate you and bring awareness regarding subjects that you may never have considered.
Liability Protection at a Campsite; Protecting You At Your Campsite
What if someone was injured or killed on your campsite or in your RV? What if your campsite fire raged out of control and damaged other property?
If you suffer either of these misfortunes, you will be exposed to the threat of lawsuit. Your homeowners insurance may not provide liability coverage for you when you are using your RV as a vacation residence. You could be subject to large financial loss without this protection.
Many RV owners insure their RVs on conventional auto policies. These auto policies typically do not provide liability protection when you are camping or otherwise using your RV as a vacation residence.
In other words, neither your homeowners nor your auto policy may provide you with the liability protection you need at a campsite.
Specialty RV insurance policies, however, merge an auto policy with components of a homeowners policy. One example is Vacation or Campsite Liability coverage. This coverage does provide you with liability protection while at your campsite and using your RV as a vacation residence.
If unsure, you may want to check with your insurance agent to see if you have this valuable coverage.
Your RV insurance can and should fit your RV. To get a free RV insurance quote with absolutely no obligation from Explorer RV Insurance Agency, Inc. call 1-888-774-6778. http://www.explorerrv.com[*11]

Types of Fuel Cells In this four- part series, FunRoads.com will take a look at fuel cells, how they work, what they mean to RVers, and what Onan is doing in the area of fuel cells for the RV market. In last month's article, we talked about the large interest in fuel cells, what fuel cells are, how they work and the much talked about hydrogen economy. This month we will look at the history of fuel cells, different fuel cell technologies and talk in more detail about Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs) and Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMs), the two most likely fuel cell technologies for mobile applications like RV's....Read More[*14]
Q & A by Mark Polk
Q: We plan to do several days of dry camping at a time, is there any way to calculate how much propane we will use?
A: There is a way to roughly calculate propane usage. You need to know how much propane is in your RV when it is full. An RV propane tank is full at 80% of its capacity to allow for expansion. Multiply your propane container capacity using one of these formulas, (gallons or pounds), to determine container BTU capacity. BTUs per gallon equal 91,502. BTUs per pound equal 21,548. Divide your container BTU capacity by the total BTU demand of the appliances you are using. BTU appliance demand can normally be found on the appliance or in the appliance owner’s manual. This will give you an idea of how long you can expect your LP gas to last. For example, if your RV propane container holds 14 gallons of LP gas when it’s full, you multiply 14 X 91,502. The result is 1281028. You divide this figure by the total BTU demand of appliances, let’s say 43,800 BTUs which gives us approximately 29 hours of use. Beware; at temperatures below zero degrees your container BTU capacity will be reduced by 50% or more.
