There was a time when most RVers were blue-haired old ladies and their polyester-clad husbands rattling around in unsightly vehicles with stickers on the back announcing that they were out spending their children’s inheritance. Those days are over.

Documenting this lifestyle revolution is RVTV, a program dedicated to the people, destinations and machines involved in answering the call of the open road.

As creature comforts such as Internet access are becoming more available and vehicles become more luxurious, everyone from millionaires to young families are taking to the highway.

RVTV visits a new destination each week, but if they do not make the cut, they do not make the show. “We wouldn’t feature any place we wouldn’t stay ourselves,” said producer Karla Dudley. “That’s one of the great things about RVing: If you don’t like your neighbors, you can leave.”

Karla was a dedicated tent camper and Rob Engman, her husband, was a city boy. The couple’s love of RVing evolved from a mutual desire to be outdoors and see the country. The idea of spending the night with nothing but a piece of canvas between him and the rain wasn’t so appealing to Rob, so they compromised and used an RV.

“When you are in an RV,” Karla said, “The world is your home. Sure you miss some creature comforts but it is really liberating to give up your possessions.”

The show evolved out of the couple’s desire to present the new face of RVing to the world.

“Site Seeing” is one of the segments on the magazine-style show. Karla and her husband Rob visit various RV resorts with their two Schnoodles (that’s a schnauzer and poodle mix) Bella and Baxter and take viewers on a tour of the resort and surrounding attractions.

As RVers have become more affluent, RV resorts have stepped up to offer features such as golf courses and Pilates classes. Some parks offer lots for sale at prices topping $250,000. A small industry has sprung up around these lots, with contractors who specialize in building outdoor patios, fireplaces and bar-b-ques that would look just as much at home as they would if they were in the backyard of a million-dollar home.

Meet a diverse group of people in the “It Takes All Kinds” segment. From circus folk to regular joes, viewers get the picture of the diverse group of people who drive around in today’s RVs.

Want to drive your RV to an isolated beach in Mexico or be right in the center of the action in Las Vegas? The “Rare Routes” segment shows how to have RV adventures in places you never thought possible.

Rounding out the show are segments on safety, gadgets and books to read as the miles go by.
