Hi Everybody,
It's hard to believe that summer will soon be over. We actually went school shopping with the kids over the weekend. Once school starts most of our RV trips will be limited to weekend excursions. Maybe we can squeeze one more trip in before Labor Day.
Someone wrote to me this week and asked if there was anything they could do to improve the braking on their trailer. It just so happened that I was working on the script for the braking chapter of our latest video production when I received the question.
It's kind of a loaded question because there are so many variables involved with a trailer brake system. You need a quality brake controller, properly installed wiring throughout the system, a good connection between the tow vehicle and trailer, and properly working components throughout the braking system. To read more about optimizing your trailer brake system be sure to read this week's feature article.
Until next week, plan your trip, travel safe and enjoy your RV experiences. Remember, getting there is half the fun!

Optimum Trailer Braking If there is one phrase I advocate it would be “you get what you pay for”. This phrase always holds true, regardless of what you are purchasing. If you are going to buy a product intended to perform a specific job it only makes sense to pay a little extra and get one that does the job flawlessly. ....... Read the article

I hope I am at the right place to get info. We recently completed a 13 week Southern road trip and went through 22 states. The only regrettable incident that occurred was a sudden power surge that caused our GE microwave to cease working. Is there a trip switch that we do not know of that would work. Please help, because I really miss the convenience of my micro. thank you
Mark Says:
Often time the microwave is wired into the Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI). If for any reason the circuit tripped there is a reset for the GFCI. It is usually (but not always) located in the bathroom. If it tripped there will be other 120 volt outlets in the kitchen and bath area that are not working in addition to the microwave.
If this is not the problem the only other possibility of some type of reset would be the circuit breaker for the microwave in the power distribution panel. If the breaker tripped you will just need to reset it.
Hopefully this is all that is wrong

Demand Water Pump – The onboard water system of your RV uses a 12-volt demand type pump to supply water throughout the RV water system. When you have potable water in your fresh water holding tank, and the pump is turned on, it pressurizes the onboard water system. When you open a faucet and the water pressure drops, the pump cycles on and off to maintain a constant pressure.

Mark's RV Quick Tip:
Safety first! Always keep in mind when you use a generator there is carbon monoxide. You should always inspect the exhaust system on the generator set before using it. Do not operate a generator with a damaged exhaust system. If you’re using a portable generator set make sure the exhaust is directed away from the camping area. Test your carbon monoxide detector for proper operation prior to using the generator. Never run a generator when you or anyone else is sleeping. Observe campground etiquette. Do not run your generator after quiet hours.

RV Safety Features, Tips and Tricks ebook
It is extremely important that RV owners understand all of the safety features on their RV, and how to properly use this safety equipment. The majority of RVers don’t know that there are between 6,500 and 20,000 reported RV fires each year, and that an RV can burn completely to the ground in as little as six minutes! These same RVers need to know what type of fire extinguisher to use on what type of fire, and how to properly use a fire extinguisher? Another disturbing fact is that carbon monoxide is the number one cause of poisoning deaths in the United States each year? RVers, in particular, need to understand what the symptoms for carbon monoxide poisoning are, and what to do if somebody is exposed to it?

A product that Mark personally uses: Camping/RV Battery Chargers- BatteryMINDers® are the new generation of SMART, pulse type "computer-on-a-chip" chargers, that safely charge and maintain all size / type / brands of batteries including starter, deep cycle and sealed types including AGM “dry” made by OPTIMA, ODYSSEY, EXIDE, INTERSTATE, et al. They do all of this without ever overcharging, no matter how long they are left on charge – days-weeks-or even months. Dubbed the chargers with "brains," they are the first to fully-automatically reverse the primary cause of early battery failure known as "sulfation". Sulfated batteries once considered beyond recovery can now be brought back to long-term useful condition. Certain models of BatteryMINDers® can more than double the useful life of new batteries.

About us:
Our goal with RV University This Week is to provide you with helpful information to make all of your RV experiences more enjoyable. I left my position as an RV Sales and F&I manager in 2000 to start my own company, RV Education 101. We produce educational videos, DVDs and e-books on how to use and maintain your RV. The reason I left my job was due to my concern about the lack of educational and safety awareness material available to the RV consumer, in other words, you. We are a small company. My wife Dawn left her position in RV sales to help start the company and is our Sales and Marketing Director. We currently have a 35-foot Class A motor home. We have two boys, Tyler 13 and Josh 19, both avid RVers and two dogs, Gracie and Buck. Gracie is the good one.
